Millions of People all over the world are discovering that they too can garden at home.

In fact it might someday come down to your families survival…

You can too, in fact with the high cost of fuel and the higher cost of produce, it is getting hard to afford the cost of food in the grocery stores, like during the great depression, people depended on growing to provide food for their families, that time may come again sooner than anyone ever thought.

Why garden at all?

Gardening, is not just for those with the knack for planting and growing and there are some that  wonder why they should even bother.

Growing a garden may take a lot of time and hard work; however, there are a number of benefits to gardening. To determine if growing a garden would be the perfect backyard activity for you, you are advised to fully examine these benefits. After that examination, you should be able to decide whether or not gardening is an activity that you would enjoy.

One of the many benefits of gardening is that you can design your garden however you want. There are a large number of individuals that choose to grow flowers, plants, or vegetables; however, you do not have to choose just one.  If you desire, you could have your garden be a collection of plants, flowers, and vegetables.

You may also find that the type of garden you choose will have a number of benefits.  For instance, plant and flower gardens are often beautiful. If you choose to grow plants or flowers, you may find that they help to improve the appearance of your backyard.  Vegetable gardens are a great way to save money on food. Many vegetable gardens are composed of potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, and beets.  If you are able to successfully grow these foods, you and your family could enjoy them as a tasty treat or part of a meal.

Perhaps, the greatest benefit of gardening is the relaxation. Although garden requires a fairly large amount of work, there are many who feel as if it really isn’t work.  In fact, there are many gardeners who say that gardening is as great way to relax. This is because you can work at your own pace.  In addition to being relaxing, a garden will be your own creation.  If are able to successfully grow a garden, you may be pleased with the results and proud of yourself, as you should be.

If you plan on using your garden as a source of relaxation, it is possible that you may prefer gardening by yourself.  Even though you may enjoy gardening by yourself, you may also find benefits to including your family in the process, especially if you have young children.  There are many children who enjoy helping their parents in the garden.  If your child would like to offer you assistance, you could purchase them their own supplies.  Most online retailers, toy stores, and department stores carry a selection of age appropriate gardening accessories.

In addition to purchasing gardening accessories for your child, if they are interested in gardening with you, you will have to purchase your own.  Gardening supplies include a wide variety of different items. These items, such as hoes, weeding forks, shovels, and knee pads, can be purchased from most retail stores.  You may find that a number of these supplies are available for an affordable price.

With the ability to create your own unique garden, improve the appearance of your backyard, grow your own food, and purchase gardening accessories for an affordable price, you are encouraged to at least consider this popular backyard activity.  You may find that it is perfect way to spend your summer.

Rain Water pollution?

Is rain water becoming polluted by airborne contaminates?

effects of pollution can cause a lot of problems and it may well be that we are seeing the beginning of some serious problems that we may face in the future if something is not done soon to reduce the emission of pollutants in the air.

The idea of this issue being a strong one is something that should be investigated soon simply because we could be in the process of wiping out hundreds of years of evolution in our forests by allowing too many contaminates in large cities.

The idea is not a new one and has been championed by many over the years, however largely this has been ignored by both the media and the main stream consumer.

However, looking at the rate of Deforestation, that we are beginning to see both due to natural causes and by harvesting trees, we could in the very near future be facing a serious issue with erosion such as happened in the dust bowl which some have argued occurred when too many trees were harvested and none were planted in its place.

In fact we can see this issue where we live, huge areas are being logged out and nothing is being done to plant new trees, this is not only disturbing but also dangerous.

So, are we looking at plant diseases caused by fallout from large cities in America?

Might we find that we are inviting the ruin of farm crops that sustain and support millions of people all over the world?

What if we found that we were polluting our way into a situation that might take years to over come?

Take in to account that fewer than three days of supplies are kept by most grocery stores and you have the ingredients of a huge disaster.

The idea that this could be a serious issue is one that some are studying, however it is not enough to just look at the problem we must find a solution because if this does not stop and stop soon, we could be looking at a famine, people would starve to death, yes, in America.

Pollution is a problem in large cities, and when strong winds blow through a city and can pick up dust and contaminates, and move them miles away, then you have the potential for mass pollution of the environment.

It is serious and it could cause massive loss of crops due to this pollution factor.

Drip irrigation

The real Green in conservation is conserving water.

Developing a system of watering at the root level is nothing new however it is something that many cultivaters are seriously looking into now that we have what appears to be a change in our climate and a change in what has traditionally been a wet sring but less water means you need to make plans to take advantage of what you have.

In some areas it is really dry and when you tink about how much difference conserving water can make it can be serioiusly instructive.

Drip irrigation is said to require up to 70 percent less water, because you literally are watering under the plant rows. Like we have done in this photo, we can water from under neath the row, at the root level.

Developing your own irrigation system can save you a lot of water as well as creating additional produce. Trickle irrigation really does help the plants because so much of the disease that effect plants comes from leaf contact, using water irrigation not only saves water, which is a great thing when you in a hot dry climate, but it also creates great growth for plants.

Invest in Guaranteed Growth in Your Own Backyard

Home Gardening is in and there are millions of Americans that have discovered the truth about gardening.

According to recently released survey results from the National Gardening Association (NGA), a $ 70 investment in home food gardening can yield, on average, a $ 600 return on the investment.

“These numbers are based on a $ 2 per pound in-season market price of produce grown in a national average garden size of 600 square feet with typical yields from the most popular vegetables,” said NGA’s Director of Research Bruce Butterfield.

In response to a dramatic increase in the number of U.S. households growing vegetables for the first time, Gardener’s Supply has created a new online Kitchen Garden Planner (KGP). The KGP online tool was created in response to the increased volume of questions from new gardeners as basic as “How do I start?” and “What should I grow?”

“We want new vegetable gardeners to have a fun and rewarding experience right from the start” said Kathy LaLiberte, Director of Gardening for Gardener’s Supply, a Vermont-based earth-friendly gardening company. “We designed this playful, interactive planning tool to take away the worries of what, when and how to plant a successful vegetable garden.”

Gardeners using the new online tool will have access to five different features: a selection of six pre-planned vegetable gardens, an interactive design-your-own-garden map, a guide to planting & care, a vegetable encyclopedia and a list of recommended supplies and accessories.

Using the interactive design tool, gardeners can select from among 30 different vegetables and ‘click and drag’ plant icons to a 3′ x 6′ garden. The tool displays how many of each plant — carrots, beets, cucumbers, etc, — will fit into each 1′ x 1′ section of the garden. It also provides step-by-step planting and care instructions, including a soil calculator to determine how much soil you’ll need to fill your raised bed garden. For those who’d rather have an expert do the planning, there are pre-planned gardens with printable planting maps available, including the ‘Plant It & Forget It Garden’ and the ‘Cook’s Choice Garden.’

The company, well-known for its practical, garden-tested products is also expanding its’ already wide selection of vegetable gardening products. Some new offerings include the Forever Raised Beds, the Self-Watering Raised Bed, Potato Bins, Cascade Planters, a stylish new look for their Tomato Success Kits and more.   In 2009, the number of households growing some of their own vegetables, fruit, berries, or herbs could increase by 7 million households (19%) to 43 million according to Butterfield.   The primary focus of our business – for the past 26 years – has been organic vegetable gardening. This renewed interest in growing your own food is very exciting. We believe strongly that food gardening is an important way for people to reconnect with nature, family, community and themselves,” continued LaLiberte.

Gardener’s Supply is employee-owned company of avid gardeners providing gardening-related products and information via their catalogs, website and retail stores. Located in Burlington, Vermont, the company has won many awards for its patented products and innovative business practices.

Buying in Bulk

Are you prepared?

FOOD STORAGE and buying foods in bulk.

Do you know that proper food storage is essential to the well-being of everyone in your household? A little knowledge on the basics of successful food storage keeps your family safe and helps you make the most of your food dollars. Here we’ll take a look at some tips and a few techniques that pay big dividends.

With the higher costs of food these days you have to think seriously about making your money last.

Food storage can be looked at from both long and short term perspectives. Bulk, canned and preserved foods in a good variety are good insurance against emergencies such as natural disasters or work shortages and layoffs. When doing your regular shopping, allot 10% of your budget towards a ready survival pantry. When storing perishables, pay attention to your food storage methods to avoid waste. However, both long and short term food storage requires safe methods and containers.

Always store bulk foods, such as rice, flour and dried beans in plastic or tin containers to protect against dampness and insects. Whole grains, such as wheat germ or wheat flour should be stored in the frig or freezer. Canned goods are best stored above the ground in a dry location. Rotate your canned stock with your most recent purchases at the back.

Almost everyone has woefully discovered perishable foods such as that bit of egg salad from last week’s lunch in a sorry state of waste. Storing leftovers in small date-marked food storage containers on a designated shelf allows you to see at a glance what should be used soon.

Herbs and spices are expensive, but indispensable to varied and interesting menus. Buy in quantities you will use in six months and store in a cool, dark location to maintain freshness.

All meats should be stored promptly. If you won’t be using these foods today, freeze them. This is particularly true of poultry, fish and seafood. A steak or roast will certainly keep in the frig until tomorrow, but don’t take chances with other meats. Double-bagging, or wrapping in butcher’s paper for the freezer preserves texture and extends freezer life.

Check the expiration dates on all dairy products. Do not store dairy products on the door of the frig. Although there’s a handy shelf on the door that fits a milk carton perfectly, this is the warmest part of the frig. Contrary to popular thought, bread does not keep well in the refrigerator. Store on your counter in a cool place. Most breads freeze well.

Good food storage practices benefit your health and your budget. Make these tips a regular habit. Your family will thank you.

Other condiments. Make sure you add cooking oil, shortening, baking powder, soda, yeast, and powdered eggs. You can’t cook even the most basic recipes without these items.

Jello, pudding, candy, etc.-you should add to your storage. These may sound frivolous, but

Vitamins

A special virtue of home stored foods is their low cost. Costs of dry bulk foods (before preparation) are often less than 1/4 of convenience and fresh foods purchased at supermarkets.
